Biography

Hailing from Southend-on-Sea in Sussex, These New Puritans was formed in 2006 by multi-instrumentalist twins Jack and George Barnett. Influenced by 1980s post-punk, the industrial scene and minimalist contemporary music, the duo teamed up with keyboardist Sophie Sleigh-Johnson and bassist Thomas Hein for their debut EP Zum Kult Film (2005) and Now Pluvial (2006), when they were spotted by fashion designer Heidi Slimane to compose the soundtrack for the Dior show. Building on this reputation, his 2008 debut album Beat Pyramid drew public and critical acclaim, and his follow-up Hidden (2010), produced by Graham Sutton of Bark Psychosis, received rave reviews. The experimental, orchestral collection, ranked No. 10 in the UK, is followed in 2013 by Field of Reeds, conceived as a duo in the spirit of a neo-classical style far removed from the dark, martial atmosphere of their predecessors. In 2019, Inside the Rose, released after several years of reflection, takes a new path in dark yet ethereal electronic orchestration. Six years on, These New Puritans return with Crooked Wing, featuring Caroline Polachek on "Industrial Love Song".
