Biography

Formed in London in 1981, Shriekback is a British band evolving on the borders of post-punk, new wave, experimental funk and tribal ambient. Barry Andrews (ex-keyboardist with XTC), Dave Allen (former bassist with Gang of Four) and Carl Marsh (guitar, vocals) are the trio behind the project, a trio already firmly rooted in the British avant-garde. Their music, as cerebral as it is physical, blends deep bass lines, hypnotic percussion, synthetic strings and cryptic lyrics, as evidenced by the single "My Spine Is the Bass-Line" (1982) and the cult albums Care (1983) with the hit "Lined Up" , and Oil & Gold (1985), with "Nemesis". Shriekback established themselves as a hybrid between rock and funk, popular with alternative music fans in search of atypical sounds and mutant grooves. Despite personnel changes and irregular periods of activity, Barry Andrews remains the group's mainstay, continuing the adventure through the decades with a fierce loyalty to sonic experimentation. Shriekback continues to produce and perform, including albums such as Why Anything? Why This? (2018), 1000 Books (2021), or Monument (2025), always rich in textures and strangeness. Without being a mainstream band, Shriekack has remained a benchmark, revered for its artistic integrity and audacity. Bassist and vocalist from the early days until 1992, after working with Gang of Four, Dave Allen died on April 5, 2025 at the age of 69.
