Biography

As Katie White's superstar dreams as part of the band TKO crumbled into support slots for Steps and Atomic Kitten, Jules De Martino's life as just one part of British pop led him to a bohemian artist community in Salford. United by a shared love of Portishead, the duo made waves on the Manchester party scene before attracting the attention of BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Marc Riley. A stint at Glastonbury Festival in 2007 and an appearance on Later...with Jools Holland heightened interest in the band, who by 2008 were considered the next big thing. The angular, chiming infectiousness of their first big single, "Great DJ", made its mark, but it was the upbeat rhythms and sugar-pop harmonies of "That's Not My Name" that propelled them to stardom, selling over 500,000 copies and topping the UK charts. The use of "Shut Up and Let Me" in an advert for a smpartphone model brought them another big hit, while their debut album We Started Nothing (2008) was a worldwide success. The Ting Tings then went on to lesser success, recording the albums Sounds from Nowheresville (2012), Super Critical (2014) and The Black Light (2018). Back in the studio after the Covid-19 pandemic, the duo unveiled Home in 2025.
