Biography

The Shaolin Afronauts is an Afrobeat band from Adelaide, Australia, formed in 2008 by members of The Transatlantics. They draw inspiration from West African artists like Fela Kuti and incorporate elements of avant-garde jazz, soul, and traditional African and Cuban rhythms. Their music is described as "interstellar futurist afro-soul." The band released their debut album, "Flight of the Ancients", in 2011 on Freestyle Records, following their performance at WOMADelaide. In 2012, they recorded their second album, "Quest under Capricorn", with an expanded ensemble of 18 musicians. Their third album, "Follow the Path", was released in 2014. The Shaolin Afronauts have played at festivals such as Glastonbury and Kennedys Creek Music Festival. In March 2020, they performed a live score to the first Mad Max film during the Adelaide Festival.
