Far less well known than Nigeria's Fela Kuti, Ghana's Ebo Taylor is a major figure in highlife, closely inspired by Afrobeat. Born Delroy Taylor in Cape Coast on January 6, 1936, the singer, guitarist and songwriter first fronted several local bands, before moving to London in 1962 to front the Black Star Highlife Band. Back in Ghana, Ebo Taylor produced and composed for local stars C. K. Mann and Pat Thomas. A late discovery in the West, Ebo Taylor released his first international album Love and Death in 2010, featuring old tracks and new compositions. Featured on many compilations devoted to highlife and Ghanaian music, Ebo Taylor is also the subject of the magnificent retrospective Life Stories: Highlife and Afrobeat Classics 1973-1980. Accompanied by the German ensemble Afrobeat Academy and supported by drummer Tony Allen, Ebo Taylor released the album Appia Kwa Bridge in 2012, followed in 2018 by Yen Ara. On February 7, 2026, Ebo Taylor died at the age of 90.
