Biography
The Rubinoos, an American power pop band, formed in 1970 in Berkeley, California. The group was founded by Tommy Dunbar and Jon Rubin, with other founding members including Greg 'Curly' Keranen, Alex Carlin, Ralph Granich, and Danny Wood. Initially playing rock and roll oldies at local dances, the Rubinoos soon shifted to original material. Their early development was influenced by Earth Quake, a band featuring Tommy Dunbar's older brother Robbie Dunbar. In 1973, Greg 'Curly' Keranen rejoined the group, which then included Donn Spindt on drums and Tom Carpender on bass. The Rubinoos released their debut single "Gorilla" in September 1974, a cover of the DeFranco Family's song, followed by their eponymous debut album The Rubinoos in 1977. This album featured the hit single "I Think We're Alone Now", which reached Number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Beserkley Records' first hit. The band appeared on various television shows, including American Bandstand, and had a number one single in Modesto, California for 13 weeks. In 1978, they released their second album Back to the Drawing Board, which included the single "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend". The Rubinoos disbanded in 1982 but reformed periodically, releasing albums such as Paleophonic (1998) and Crimes Against Music (2003). They are known for their theme song to the 1984 film Revenge of the Nerds.
