Biography
The Royal Teens were an American rock and roll group formed in New Jersey in 1956, originally comprising Bob Gaudio on piano, Tom Austin on drums, Billy Dalton on guitar, and Billy Crandall on saxophone, with the ensemble later adding Diana Lee as a vocalist. Their breakthrough came with the single "Short Shorts" (1957) released on Power Records and later licensed to ABCâParamount, which peaked at numberâ¯3 on the Billboard Hotâ¯100 in 1958 and became a defining hit of the late 1950s. The group followed up with "Believe Me" in 1959, reaching numberâ¯26 on the charts. Despite the commercial success, the Royal Teens never issued a fullâlength album and disbanded in 1965 after extensive touring that included appearances alongside Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Chuck Berry. Postâgroup, Bob Gaudio joined the Four Seasons, while Billy Crandall pursued a career with The Knickerbockers and later a Messianic group before his death in 1998. The Royal Teensâ legacy endures through the continued use of "Short Shorts" in media, such as its appearance in the 1970s Nair commercials and the 2023 Japanese television program Tamori Club.
