Biography

A vocal group blending doo-wop and rhythm'n'blues with a healthy dose of humor, The Coasters had a string of hits in the Fifties, starting with "Down in Mexico" and then "Young Blood". With the help of songwriters Leiber & Stoller, the band matched their hits with comic numbers on stage. The No. 1 "Yaketi Yak " preceded "Along Came Jones", "Poison Ivy" and "Little Egypt". Success declined after changes in personnel, label and era, but The Coasters remained one of the finest specimens of the genre.
