Biography

The Radiants were an American doo-wop and R&B group, formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1960. The group's members first crossed paths while singing in the youth choir of Greater Harvest Baptist Church. Maurice McAlister led the group, who initially performed both his self-penned gospel and secular tunes. Seeking a record deal, they shifted focus to secular music after labels showed little interest in gospel groups. Their first single, "Father Knows Best" b/w "One Day I'll Show You", was produced by Billy Davis and released on Chess Records in 1962, becoming a regional hit in Cleveland. However, the Radiants' subsequent singles for Chess did not achieve significant sales, leading to a split by 1964. Maurice McAlister and Wallace Sampson continued as a trio with Leonard Caston Jr., achieving their biggest hit with "Voice Your Choice" in 1964. The follow-up single, "It Ain't No Big Thing", was also successful. After Leonard Caston Jr. left the group in 1965, James Jameson joined in his place. This line-up recorded only one single, "Baby You Got It". Mitchell Bullock later replaced Maurice McAlister as lead singer, and the group released their final hit single, "Hold On", in 1967. Despite several more singles, Chess dropped The Radiants in 1969. They continued performing together until 1972.
