Biography

The Power Station were an American-British musical supergroup formed in New York City in 1984, comprising John Taylor on bass, Andy Taylor on guitar, Tony Thompson on drums, and Robert Palmer as the lead vocalist. The band emerged during a hiatus of Duran Duran, with John Taylor and his then-girlfriend Bebe Buell initially planning to record "Get It On" by T. Rex. After their relationship ended, the musicians decided to form Big Brother, inviting various singers, including Robert Palmer. Robert Palmer's involvement led to the creation of The Power Station, and in 1985, they released their self-titled debut album, which peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 and sold over a million copies within a year. The album featured hits like "Some Like It Hot" and "Get It On (Bang a Gong)". Despite Robert Palmer's departure before the promotional tour, the band continued with Michael Des Barres of Detective as the new vocalist. They performed at Live Aid in 1985 but disbanded by November that year. In 1996, after a decade-long hiatus and the death of Bernard Edwards, who had produced both albums, The Power Station released their final album, Living in Fear. The band's activities ceased following the deaths of Robert Palmer and Tony Thompson in 2003.
