Biography

The Penguins were an American doo-wop group from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1953 by Cleveland Duncan, Curtis Williams, Dexter Tisby, and Bruce Tate, they gained attention for their midtempo performance style blending rhythm and blues and rock and roll. Their breakthrough came with the release of "Earth Angel" in late 1954, which peaked at Number 8 on the US Billboard Best Sellers in Stores pop chart and held a three-week run at Number 1 on the R&B chart. The group disbanded in 1962, but Cleveland Duncan continued performing as The Penguins until his death in November 2012.
