Biography

The New Power Generation (also known as NPG) is a funk, rock and R&B group formed in 1990 by singer Prince to accompany him, and comprising singers and musicians. Initially formed for the Diamonds and Pearls tour, the group became a key entity in Prince's musical universe. Their first album with Prince, Diamonds and Pearls (1991), includes hits such as "Cream" and "Gett Off". Under Prince's direction, NPG distinguished itself with a sound that fused funk, rock and soul, evolving towards a more groovy, electronic style. The band participated in other successful Prince albums such as Love Symbol Album (1992) and The Gold Experience (1995). After leaving Prince in 1996, The New Power Generation continued to play and record independently, as evidenced by the albums Gold Nigga (1993) and Exodus (1995), before the leader returned for Newpower Soul (1998). Core members include Levi Seacer Jr. (guitar), Sonny T. (bass), Michael Bland (drums) and Morris Hayes (keyboards). Since Prince's death in 2016, NPG has continued to perform, honoring the artist's legacy while exploring new musical horizons, though without regaining the same renown as with him.
