The Mezzrow-Bechet Quintet was a jazz combo led by clarinetists Mezz Mezzrow (born Milton Mesirow on November 9, 1899 in Chicago, Illinois) and Sidney Bechet (born May 15, 1897 in New Orleans, Louisiana). Mezz Mezzrow had been a juvenile delinquent and spent time in reformatory schools and prisons before discovering his love of jazz and the clarinet. He then became a musician and began organizing and financing recording sessions with Sidney Bechet, one of the early pioneers of jazz. Mezz Mezzrow joined Sidney Bechet for some of these sessions, recorded between 1945 and 1947. Those recordings - which included âReally the Bluesâ, âJelly Rollâ, âOld Schoolâ, âI Want Someâ, and âBreathless Bluesâ â were released as singles in 1946 and 1947. They were not gathered together on an album until Really the Blues was released in 1956. Throughout the next few decades, other tracks from these sessions were issued on compilations released by several different labels. Mezz Mezzrow died on August 5, 1972. Sidney Bechet died on May 14, 1959.
