Biography

The McCrarys, an American family group from Youngstown, Ohio, began their musical journey in 1972. The quintet consisted of siblings Linda, Alfred, Charity, Sam, and Howard McCrary. Their initial release was the gospel album Sunshine Day on Light Records. Transitioning to secular music mid-1970s, Howard left the group to continue his career in gospel. The McCrarys released their first secular album, Emerge, on Cat's Eye records in 1973. They relocated to Los Angeles and recorded a series of R&B albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Their breakthrough came with "You", featuring harmonica by Stevie Wonder, which peaked just below Number 40 on Pop radio stations. The song was included on their debut Portrait album Loving is Living. Their follow-up album on Portrait was On the Other Side in 1979, featuring the Top 40 R&B single "Lost in Loving You". Howard rejoined the group for their first Capitol release, Just for You, in 1980. The song "Any Ol' Sunday" from this album became a hit single for Chaka Khan on her 1981 album What Cha' Gonna Do for Me. In 2014, The McCrarys founded The McCrary Foundation Choir and released their first single "Let There Be Peace" in October 2016.
