Neil James Huntsman, known professionally as Jamesâ¯Hunter, was born 2â¯Octoberâ¯1962 in Colchester, Essex, United Kingdom, and became a blues guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. After leaving school at 16, he worked various jobs while performing on the streets, then moved to London in 1986 where he founded Howlinââ¯Wilfâ¯andâ¯theâ¯Veeâ¯Jays, releasing three albums and a miniâalbum before the group disbanded in 1989. He reâformed his band in the early 1990s, later signing with Go Records and releasing Peopleâ¯Gonnaâ¯Talk (2004), which earned a 2007 Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album. In 2012 he renamed the ensemble Theâ¯Jamesâ¯Hunterâ¯Six and signed to Daptone Records, issuing Nickâ¯ofâ¯Time (2020) and Withâ¯Love (2022). Off the Fence saw its release with the James Hunter Six in early 2026. The band has toured with Vanâ¯Morrison, Arethaâ¯Franklin, and others, cementing Jamesâ¯Hunterâs place in contemporary blues.
