Biography

Neil James Huntsman, known professionally as James Hunter, was born 2 October 1962 in Colchester, Essex, United Kingdom, and became a blues guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. After leaving school at 16, he worked various jobs while performing on the streets, then moved to London in 1986 where he founded Howlin’ Wilf and the Vee Jays, releasing three albums and a mini‑album before the group disbanded in 1989. He re‑formed his band in the early 1990s, later signing with Go Records and releasing People Gonna Talk (2004), which earned a 2007 Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album. In 2012 he renamed the ensemble The James Hunter Six and signed to Daptone Records, issuing Nick of Time (2020) and With Love (2022). Off the Fence saw its release with the James Hunter Six in early 2026. The band has toured with Van Morrison, Aretha Franklin, and others, cementing James Hunter’s place in contemporary blues.
