Formed in 2009, British jazz outfit the Greg Foat Group combined modern jazz with adventurous and bold instrumentation and energy. The group was influenced by classic jazz as well as soundtracks, soul jazz, and library music. Led by pianist, composer, arranger, and DJ Greg Foat, the group has also featured acclaimed musicians Marius Ptas (guitar), Phil Achille (double bass), Rob Mach (saxophone), Jacob Ohvall (bass), Trevor Walker (trumpet/flugelhorn), Henric Strall (acoustic guitar), and Tony Coote (drums). Born in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight, Greg Foat spent part of his career working with a diverse array of artists including Wendy James (ex-Transvision Vamp), the Kooks, Bob Lind, Rita Ora, and Questlove (the Roots). With his own group, he was able to create music heavily inspired by his musical influences including Gordon Beck, Stan Tracey, Michael Garrick, Keith Tippett, Graham Collier, Ennio Morricone, Piero Piccioni, Michel Legrand, Vangelis, and John Klemmer. Signing with the Jazzman label, the Greg Foat Group released Dark Is the Sun, their debut album, in 2011. The album was followed by Girl and Robot with Flowers (2012), Live at the Playboy Club, London (2014), The Dancers at the Edge of Time (2015), and Cityscapes/Landscapes (2016). Greg Foat put the group name to rest and has continued as an award-winning solo artist, winning the 2020 Jazz Revelations Album of the Year award for his Symphonie Pacifique album.
