Biography
The Golden Cups is a Japanese pop and rock band formed in November 1966 in Yokohama. The original lineup included Tokimune "Dave" Hirao on vocals, Guang-yuan "Eddie" Ban and Kenneth Ito on guitars, Masayoshi "Louis" Kabe on bass, and Mamoru Manu on drums. Initially known as Group & I, they began performing covers of American pop and rock hits at local venues. Their debut single "Itoshi No Jizabel / Hiwa Mata Noboru" was released in June 1967, followed by their debut album The Golden Cups Album in March 1968. Their biggest pop hit was "Nagai Kami No Shoujo", also known as "Girl With Long Hair". Kenneth Ito was replaced by keyboard player Mickey Yoshino for the album The Golden Cups Album Vol. 2 (1968). They released albums such as Blues Message, Super Live Session, Recital, and Live Album with the Golden Cups. The band disbanded after a fire destroyed their equipment during a New Year's Eve performance in Okinawa in 1971, but reunited for a concert in Yokohama in 2003 and released a live album.
