Biography

Mickie Yoshino is a Japan Academy Film Prize-winning composer, producer, and keyboardist, as well as the leader of the long-running rock band Godiego. He was born on December 13, 1951, in Yokohama, Japan. While still a teenager, he began playing shows at the American military base in his hometown, then joined The Golden Cups in 1967. He left the band's lineup four years later and relocated to America, where he studied at Berklee College of Music. After graduation, he returned to Japan and formed Godiego in 1975. The band earned hits with singles like "Gandhara," "Monkey Magic," and "The Galaxy Express 999," all of which reached number 2 in Japan. Meanwhile, Yoshino also established himself as a hitmaker outside of the band, reaching number 16 on the UK charts with his theme song to the BBC TV series The Water Margin and releasing his first solo album, Zan-Sonezakishinju, in 1975. More than a dozen solo albums followed over the next handful of decades, as did two records by his crossover band EnTRANS. A frequent contributor to Japanese soundtracks, Yoshino won the Japan Academy Film Prize in 2005 for his work on the movie Swing Girls, which was followed by film scores for movies like 2008's Happy Flight and 2016's The Seal of the Sun. In 2023, his song "歓びの歌 (feat. Mummy-D)" reached number 71 on Japan's Top 200 Shazam chart.
