Biography
The G-Clefs were an American soul vocal group formed in Roxbury, Massachusetts, in 1952 by five members, including the Scott brothers and childhood friend Ray Gibson. Their early background began in the choir of St. Richardâs Catholic Church, where they honed their harmonies before being discovered by talent scout Jack Gold, who encouraged them to perform professionally in greater Boston during the early 1950s. Their breakthrough came with the 1956 single "Ka-Ding-Dong" (featuring Freddy Cannon on guitar), which peaked at Number 24 on the Billboard Hotâ¯100 and became the first national hit for their Bostonâbased label, Pilgrim Records. In 1961, the group released "I Understand (Just How You Feel)", a track that used the melody of âAuld Langâ¯Syneâ and reached Number 9 on the U.S. chart and Number 17 in the UK. The G-Clefs continued to record and perform locally, releasing album The GâClefs on Stage (1968). Their career spanned several decades, with continued touring in the Boston area into the 2000s. The groupâs members passed away over the years-Ray Gibson in 2015, Tim Scott in 2017, Teddy Scott in 2018, Ilanga Scott in 2022, and finally Chris Scott in 2025-leaving a legacy marked by two Topâ¯40 hits and a sustained presence in the regional soul music scene.
