Biography

The Castle Jazz Band, a Dixieland jazz ensemble from Portland, Oregon, was formed in 1943 by Monte Ballou. In December 1947, they recorded "At a Georgia Camp Meeting" and "Ory's Creole Trombone," which garnered national and international attention. The band became regulars at the Rathskeller Club in 1948 and moved to the Sportsman Club, where they attracted both local and San Francisco traditional jazz fans. Their heyday was from 1949 to 1951, featuring at the 1949 Dixieland Jubilee concert and releasing 13 more recordings on Castle Records.
