Biography

By combining the tempos of dance-pop with the overdriven guitars of alternative rock, Republica scored a pair of worldwide hits during the 1990s. "Ready to Go" was the first Top 40 single for the British band, which was formed in 1994 by keyboardists Tim Dorney and Andy Todd. Vocalist Saffron joined the group in 1995, and Republica released its debut album one year later. The self-titled Republica peaked at Number 4 in the UK, with "Ready to Go" becoming a hit not only in England, but in Australia, Canada, and America, as well. Another single from the same album, "Drop Dead Gorgeous," charted even higher in the UK. Republica returned in 1998 with Speed Ballads, although the subsequent folding of the band's record label, Deconstruction Records, prevented the album from being released in the United States. Republica took an extended hiatus in 2002 and reunited a decade later, releasing the EP Christiana Obey in 2013 and touring throughout the following two years.
