Formed in the mid-2000s, The Circling Sun is a New Zealand jazz collective based in TÄmaki Makaurau (Auckland). It brings together musicians, producers and DJs from New Zealand's independent scene, driven by a shared passion for spiritual jazz, Afrocentric groove and global musical traditions. The band includes renowned figures such as Julien Dyne (drums, percussion), Ben Turua (double bass), J.Y. Lee (saxophones, flute, bass clarinet), Guy Harrison (keyboards, trumpet), Cameron Allen (saxophones, keyboards), Finn Scholes (trumpet, vibraphone) and Matt Hunter, aka Kenny Sterling (percussion, choir director). Their debut album, Spirits, released in 2023 on UK label Soundway Records, was enthusiastically received for its instrumental richness and coherent sound. In July 2025, The Circling Sun released their second album Orbits, broadening the sonic spectrum with the addition of cosmic synthesizers, Afro-Cuban grooves, Brazilian percussion and vocal sections led by the Love Affinity Choir.
