Biography

The Butchies were an all-female punk rock band from Durham, North Carolina. Formed in 1998 by Team Dresch guitarist Kaia Wilson, bassist Alison Martlew, and drummer Melissa York, the group quickly gained attention for their queer themes and energetic performances. Their debut album, Are We Not Femme?, was released on November 10, 1998, followed by Population: 1975 in October 1999, both through Mr. Lady Records. The band's third album, 3, came out in April 2001, and their final release, Make Yr Life, was issued on April 6, 2004, by Yep Roc Records. Throughout their career, The Butchies contributed to notable compilations such as the Human Rights Campaign's Being Out Rocks (2002). After announcing a hiatus in 2005, The Butchies reunited briefly in 2010.
