The Blue Rags, an American revivalist, ragtime, and boogie-woogie band from Asheville, North Carolina, formed in 1990 when pianist Jake Hollifield and guitarist Scott Sharpe met while attending community college. The group initially gained traction with their unique sound, often described as "punk ragtime." The band toured extensively in the late 1990s and influenced artists such as The Avett Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show. Their debut album, Rag-N-Roll, was released in 1997 by Sub Pop and featured a mix of original songs and covers. The band's second album, Eat at Joeâs (1999), consisted primarily of original compositions and received positive reviews for its retro fun without irony. Despite their success, the band parted ways with Sub Pop in September 1999 and disbanded informally in 2000. The band later reunited for occasional performances in the Asheville area, while its members pursued other musical projects, including Bill Reynolds, who became the bassist for Band of Horses.
