Biography

The Barleycorn, an Irish traditional music and rebel music band, was formed in mid-1971 in Belfast by Paddy McGuigan, Liam Tiernan, Brian McCormick, and John Delaney. Their breakthrough came with "The Men Behind the Wire" in December 1971, which topped the Irish charts for five weeks. The band's debut album, Live at the Embankment, was released in 1972, followed by The Barleycorn in America in 1973 and The Winds are Singing Freedom (1974). They achieved significant chart success with the single "The Fields of Athenry" (1982), which reached Number 7 in Ireland in 1982. The band underwent several lineup changes over the years and disbanded in 1995.
