Biography

In the first 19 years of their musical career The Avalanches released just one album and had a 300% turnover of band personnel, two of whom were quite badly injured during live performances. Behind these unpromising statistics lies the intriguing musical partnership of bassist and keyboard player Tony Di Blasi and keyboardist Robbie Chater who form the core of The Avalanches, which started in Melbourne, Australia in 1994 when those two played with singer Darren Seltmann and drummer Manabu Etoh. Their debut album, Since I Left You, won critical acclaim around the globe after its release in November 2000. It contained over 3500 samples from a wide variety of genres which brought a rich texture to the 18-track record. Despite the accolades and the many industry awards for the album, the band then took a 15-year hiatus from releasing albums. In 2016 Di Blasi and Chater brought out Wildflower, a collection of songs they'd been working on since 2005. Like the debut album, it received universal critical acclaim and the album went to Number 1 in Australia, Number 10 in the UK and Number 27 in the US. Working at what for them was a lightning pace, they released new singles in 2020 that led to the December release of their third album, We Will Always Love You, in that year.
