Biography
Teresa Suárez CosÃo, known professionally as Teri Gender Bender, was born on May 15, 1989 in Denver, Colorado. She is an American singer and musician of Mexican and Spanish descent. At age ten, she began having recurring dreams of playing guitar and convinced her father to buy one for her. In 2007, at age 17, Suárez founded Le Butcherettes with drummer Auryn Jolene while still in school in Guadalajara, Mexico. The band incorporated graphic elements such as raw meat and bloody aprons into their stage performances, and Suárez adopted the last name Gender Bender as a feminist statement. Their debut EP Kiss & Kill was released in 2008. In 2011, Omar RodrÃguez-López signed Le Butcherettes to his label, produced their first album Sin Sin Sin, and briefly served as their bassist. Suárez contributed lyrics and vocals to RodrÃguez-López' Octopus Kool Aid in 2012. The band's 2014 album Cry Is for the Flies was written about her experience moving from her family in Mexico to Los Angeles.
