Biography
The story of Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley's meeting in a philosophy class when both were students at the University of Denver in 2008 sounds like something from a fairy tale. Moore had sung in church choirs in her youth, but had no serious musical aspirations, planning a career in law. But, after graduation, she and Riley went on an eight-month sailing trip down the East Atlantic Seaboard and returned with a bunch of songs based on their experiences. They added a drummer, James Barone, and went on the road, recorded their first EP 'Baltimore' in 2010 and followed up with their debut album 'Cape Dory' on the Fat Possum label.
Aside from their own songs, they specialised in covers, recording new versions of old hits like The Zombies' 'Tell Her No', Television's 'Guiding Light' and Brenda Lee's 'Is It True?'. Their fame grew with TV appearances on David Letterman and Jay Leno and Patrick Carney of Black Keys produced their second album 'Young & Old' in 2012, full of much deeper and more serious songs than its predecessor. Their third album 'Ritual in Repeat' came out in 2014, as they explored a style deeply immersed in pop history. In 2016, they went on another sailing trip in the Pacific in a bid to rediscover the organic songwriting magic that inspired them in the first place, formed their own label, re-established themselves as a duo, and discarded outside producers to self-produce their next album of classic pop values, 'Yours Conditionally', released in 2017.
