Biography

Teletubbies, a British children's television series created by Anne Wood and Andrew Davenport for the BBC, originated in 1997. The show featured four characters known as Teletubbies: Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa, and Po. Each character was named after the uniquely shaped antenna protruding from their heads and communicated mostly through gibberish. The series rapidly became a commercial success in Britain and abroad, winning multiple BAFTA awards and being nominated for two Daytime Emmys throughout its run. In December 1997, a single based on the show's theme song reached Number 1 in the UK Singles Chart and remained in the Top 75 for 32 weeks, selling over a million copies. By October 2000, the franchise generated over £1 billion ($1.6 billion) in merchandise sales. The original series ended in 2001 but was rebooted in 2014, premiering on CBeebies in the United Kingdom and on the Nick Jr. Channel in the United States. The reboot ran for 120 episodes, with the last episode airing on August 17, 2018. Teletubbies released several albums during their career, including Nursery Rhymes and Other Fun Songs (1997), Teletubbies Say "Eh-Oh!" (1997), Teletubbies: The Album (1998), Bedtime and Playtime Stories (2014), and Go! Exercise with the Teletubbies (2014).
