Biography

Ted Chippington (real name Francis Smyth, born in February 1962 in Stoke‑on‑Trent, Staffordshire, England) emerged as a singer and comedian in the early 1980s, initially performing under the name Eddie Chippington before adopting the stage name Ted Chippington in 1984. His first breakthrough came with the 1985 Non Stop Party Hits of the '50s, '60s & '70s EP, released by Vindaloo Records, which featured his reinterpretation of "D.I.S.C.O." and attracted airplay on BBC Radio One’s John Peel show. In 1986 he issued the album Man in a Suitcase, a collection of live recordings and covers including "She Loves You" and "I Feel Like Buddy Holly"; the album reached number five on the UK Indie chart. The single "She Loves You" received extensive radio rotation, although it failed to enter the UK Singles Chart, and a subsequent single, "Rockin' with Rita (Head to Toe)", peaked at number seventy‑seven on the UK Singles Chart. After a brief retirement in 1990 and a return to the stage in 2007, Ted Chippington released the box set Walking Down the Road on Big Print.
