Biography

Although best remembered as the Foo Fighters' larger-than-life drummer, Taylor Hawkins also performed with artists like Alanis Morissette and Sass Jordan during his 28-year career, while occasionally fronting a handful of side projects like NHC, The Birds of Satan, and Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on February 17, 1972, and moved to southern California during his early adolescence. After briefly drumming for the Canadian rock singer Sass Jordan, he joined Alanis Morissette's touring lineup in June 1995 and remained there until 1997, when he left the band in order to join Foo Fighters. Beginning with 1996's There Is Nothing Left to Lose, he played an integral part in the band's songwriting process and award-winning stage show, even handling lead vocals on the 2006 single "Cold Day in the Sun." The song became a Number 1. Hit on the UK Rock & Metal chart, as well as a Number 2 hit on Billboard's Alternative Airplay. That same year, he also released the self-titled debut album from his solo project, Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, whose catalog later grew to include 2010's Red Light Fever and 2019's Get the Money. He also released a self-titled album from another solo project, The Birds of Satan, and recorded an album with the supergroup NHC — featuring Jane's Addiction members Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney — during the final year of his life. While touring with Foo Fighters in support of the band's Grammy-winning album Medicine at Midnight, he died in his hotel room in Bogotá, Columbia, on March 25, 2022, one month after his 50th birthday.
