Biography

Dave Grohl is an American rock star who gained fame as the drummer in the band Nirvana and, following the death in 1994 of Nirvana frontman Kurt Covain, he became leader of the group Foo Fighters, going on to attain international acclaim. Born in Ohio, he grew up in Virginia where he learned to play the guitar at a young age. He played guitar in bands while in high school including one called Freak Baby and when they changed their name to Mission Impossible, he switched to percussion. He had a stint with punk band Dain Bramage and then at 17 joined an outfit called Scream. He toured with them and made two albums and when the band broke up he was hired by Nirvana where he won huge acclaim in percussion and became a major songwriter. Following Cobain's death, Grohl performed with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and then set about creating his own band. Foo Fighters, who released their debut album in 1995, had major success and built up a loyal fan base. Grohl has performed separately with many top artists including Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Eddie Vedder, Elvis Costello, Steve Van Zandt and in supergroup Them Crooked Vultures with Josh Homme and John Paul Jones. He has been nominated for 39 Grammy Awards with 16 wins between Nirvana and Foo Fighters and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Nirvana in 2014. He is active as a producer, his songs featuring on many movies and television shows and in 1994 he played drums on the soundtrack for 'Backbeat'. He was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards when he directed an episode titled 'Washington D.C.' in the TV series 'Sonic Highways' in 2015. He released a short documentary in praise of musical instruments titled 'Play' in 2018 and the soundtrack EP went to number six on Billboard's Hard Rock Albums Chart.
