Biography
Allen Rathel Bunn, known professionally as Tarheel Slim, and born on September 24, 1923, in Bailey, North Carolina, was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist whose work spanned blues, gospel, R&B, pop, doowop, and rockabilly. He started his career singing with gospel groups before joining the Larks, a secular group formed from the Selah Jubilee Singers. In 1950, Bunn's lead vocals and guitar work on "Eyesight to the Blind" reached number 5 on the Billboard R&B chart. After leaving the Larks in early 1952, he recorded for Apollo and released notable rockabilly tracks "Wildcat Tamer"/Number 9 Train" in 1958. Collaborating with his wife Anna Lee "Little Ann" Sandford, they achieved chart success in 1959 with "It's Too Late," which peaked at number 20 on the R&B chart. He died from pneumonia on August 21, 1977, following a battle with throat cancer.
