Biography

Blind Joe Taggart, born Joel Washington Taggart on August 16, 1892 in Abbeville, South Carolina, was an American country blues and gospel singer and guitarist. Taggart recorded under various pseudonyms including Blind Joe Amos and Blind Jeremiah Taylor. His recordings have also been cited for containing some of the earliest blues musical styles ever recorded. He began his career in 1926 with the Vocalion label, releasing notable songs such as "The Storm is Passing Over" (1927) and "I Wish My Mother Was On that Train" (1927). He made his last commercial recordings in 1934, before passing away on January 15, 1961 at Presbyterian-St Luke's Hospital in Chicago. Taggart’s work has been reissued on CD by Document Records and was recognized for its influence on later artists.
