Biography

Paul Giger, born in 1952 in Herisau, Switzerland, is a Swiss violinist and composer. He began playing the violin at age eight and later traveled through Asia as a street musician before pursuing formal music studies in Winterthur and Bern. Giger earned his teaching diploma in 1976 and his soloist diploma in 1980. From 1980 to 1983, he served as the concertmaster of the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra. Giger's discography includes several albums released under ECM Records, including Alpstein (1991), Schattenwelt (1993), Ignis (2000), and Vindonissa (2003). Some of his compositions and performances feature the violino d'amore, a unique five-string violin with six resonance strings.
