Biography
Sylvia Syms, born Sylvia Blagman on December 2, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York, was an American jazz singer. She received informal training from Billie Holiday and made her debut in 1941 at Kelly's Stable. In 1956, she signed with Decca Records and achieved major success with "I Could Have Danced All Night", which sold over one million copies and earned a gold disc. Syms collaborated with Frank Sinatra on her 1982 album Syms by Sinatra. She made regular appearances at the Carlyle in Manhattan and performed in various films and television shows. Despite having a lung removed around 1972, she continued performing. Syms died of a heart attack on May 10, 1992, while performing at the Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel in New York City.
