Biography

Serge Chaloff, born on November 24, 1923 in Boston, Massachusetts, was an American jazz baritone saxophonist. He began his musical journey on piano at six before teaching himself the baritone saxophone at 12 after hearing Harry Carney. By age 16, he joined Tommy Reynolds’s band, and in 1944 he entered Boyd Raeburn’s orchestra, recording the opening baritone line on "A Night in Tunisia" and meeting Charlie Parker, whose influence shaped Chaloff’s bebop style. He rose to prominence with Woody Herman’s Second Herd in 1947, contributing to recordings such as "Four Brothers" and "Keen and Peachy". After periods in Count Basie’s Octet and Boston clubs, Chaloff signed with Capitol Records, issuing Boston Blow‑Up! in 1995 and later Blue Serge in 1956 with a lineup that included Philly Joe Jones and Sonny Clark. Chaloff passed away on July 16, 1957 at age 33.
