Biography

Though the psychedelic rock band Sweet Smoke formed in Brooklyn in 1967, they achieved their greatest success after decamping for Europe. The group settled in Germany in 1969 and that was where guitarist Marvin Kaminovitz, drummer Jay Dorfman, bassist Andy Dershin, multi-instrumentationalist Michael Fontana, and guitarist Victor Sacco began building a name for themselves as a live act thanks to their jam-heavy sets and intricate, jazz-inspired playing that often featured solos from various band members. Sacco was replaced by Steve Rosenstein, and it was this line-up that recorded their first and best known album, 1970’s Just a Poke. The quintet undertook a spiritual journey to India and it was on that trip they discovered they had gained a larger following. They got around to recording a second LP, Darkness to Light in 1973. After that, Dershin, Rosenstein, and Fontana left the group. The band hired replacements and continued for a little longer before breaking up for good. Their final concert was recorded and issued as the 1974 live album Sweet Smoke Live.
