Biography
An emblematic progressive rock band, Pink Floyd debuted in 1967 with the album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the only one to feature its composer and singer Syd Barrett (1946-2006) in its entirety. Dismissed the following year, he left his place as solo guitarist to David Gilmour, while bassist Roger Waters took on the role of leader. The band is completed by keyboardist Rick Wright (1943-2008) and drummer Nick Mason. The band's second album A Saucerful of Secrets (1968) and the soundtrack to the film More (1969) were followed by the experimental studio and live double album Ummagumma (1969), the conceptual Atom Heart Mother (1970) and Meddle (1971), which laid the foundations for future productions, including The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), the third best-selling album in history, which managed to stay on the Billboard charts for 741 weeks. Now under the tutelage of Roger Waters, Pink Floyd released the albums Wish You Were Here (1975) and Animals (1977), although the latter showed signs of the tension that was to come to the fore in The Wall (1979), produced by Bob Ezrin. The album gave the band their biggest single success with "Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2", which reached No. 1. Roger Waters' influence is further strengthened by the feature film The Wall, starring Bob Geldof (The Boomtown Rats), and the autobiographical album The Final Cut (1983). Determined to bring the band's history to a close, Roger Waters embarked on a solo career, but found himself sued by the other musicians, who won their case. Under the leadership of David Gilmour, Pink Floyd took a new musical direction on A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994), juxtaposed with the live recordings Delicate Sound of Thunder (1988) and Pulse (1995). The differences between Roger Waters and David Gilmour dissipated in 2005, during the Live 8 charity concert, but Pink Floyd remained dormant, devoting themselves only to reissue programs (Shine On in 1992 and Discovery in 2011), until the album The Endless River (2014). In 2016, the boxed set The Early Years 1967-1972 compiles all the audio and visual archives of the period. This was followed three years later by The Later Years (1987-2019). In 2022, Pink Floyd deliver their first unreleased recording since 2014 with the charity single "Hey Hey Rise Up" against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It includes the vocals of Andriy Khlyvnyuk from Ukrainian rock band Boombox. Several live recordings follow, including The Dark Side of the Moon - Live at Wembley 1974 (2023) and Live at Pompeii - MCMLXXII (2025), retracing the famous concert without an audience filmed in the amphitheater of the fallen city.
