Biography

An R&B and New Jack Swing singer, Ceybil Jefferies was born in New York's Brooklyn neighborhood in 1962. Signed to the Atlantic label, she produced the album Let the Music Take Control (1991) under her birth name, before taking the pseudonym Sable Jefferies, then Sweet Sable for her new label Scotti Bros. Influenced by the New Jack Swing craze, she recorded the track "Friends (For Old Time's Sake)", which was renamed "Old Time's Sake" and chosen for the soundtrack of the cult film Above the Rim (1994). The Billboard Hot 100 No. 93 track was quickly followed by the album of the same name, the only one released under the Sweet Sable name. The singer's greatest success, however, was her association with Dutch house band Deep Zone, for whom she performed the 1996 track "It's Gonna Be Alright", which reached #2 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play and various European charts. Other tracks were released under her original name in the early 2000s. Following health problems, Ceybil Jefferies died of Covid-19 on April 10, 2020.
