Swampwater was an American country rock band formed in 1968. Originally serving as the backing group for Linda Ronstadt, the band incorporated Cajun and swamp rock elements into its music. The lineup featured John Beland, Gib Guilbeau, Stan Pratt, Thad Maxwell, and Eric White. In 1971, the group gained prominence appearing on The Johnny Cash Show, which helped secure a recording contract with RCA. Their debut album, Swampwater, was released in 1971 on Starday King Records, followed by a second eponymous album on RCA. After departing from Ronstadt, the band toured with Arlo Guthrie and performed at the Hollywood Bowl. Beland left for a solo career in 1972, and the group disbanded shortly after. A 1979 reunion involving drummer Mickey McGee resulted in the album Reunion, released in 1987. The bandâs guitar style was a noted influence on the early records of the Eagles. By 1980, several members joined The Flying Burrito Brothers.
