Nigerian singer, songwriter and producer Austin Iornongu Iwar Jnr, aka Tay Iwar, was born in Marina, Lagos Island, on June 9, 1997. Growing up between Lagos and Abuja, he showed an early interest in music, starting to use production software at the age of fourteen. In 2014, he made his first mixtape, Passport, nominated two years in a row at the Nigerian Teen Choice Awards, before the 2016 release of Renascentia. Tay Iwar quickly established himself as a major figure in the new alté movement, fusing R&B, hip-hop, neo-soul and African rhythms. He records the album Gemini (2019), featuring his older brother Suté Iwar, as well as Cruel Santino and Odunsi (The Engine). The same year sees the release of the eight-track EP Gold. After a collaboration with Wizkid on the Grammy-nominated hit "True Love" in 2020, Iwar followed this up with a series of EPs: Love & Isolation in 2021, Summer Breeze in 2023, Gold II in 2024 and Reflection Station in 2025, whose title track reached number 47 in the U.S. Afrobeats charts.
