Biography
Formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1989, Superchunk helped define the American indie-rock underground with their raw, hook-laden songs and fiercely DIY ethos. Founded by guitarist-vocalist Mac McCaughan, bassist Laura Ballance, guitarist Jim Wilbur, and drummer Jon Wurster, the band became synonymous with the energetic, fuzz-driven sound of the early 1990s. At a time when major labels were courting alternative acts, Superchunk chose independence, co-founding the influential label Merge Records, which went on to release music by Arcade Fire, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Spoon. Their albumsâranging from the frenetic No Pocky for Kitty (1991) to the anthemic Foolish (1994) and the mature urgency of I Hate Music (2013)âtrace a career of restless creativity and longevity. Known for explosive live shows and unshakable melodies, Superchunk remain a cornerstone of indie-rock, embodying the spirit of resilience and self-determination in alternative music. The band released their 12th album Wild Loneliness in 2022, with Songs in the Key of Yikes following in 2025.
