Biography
An American band formed in Dayton, Ohio, in 1983, Guided by Voices straddle the border between post-punk-inspired rock and lo-fi alternative, demonstrating rare longevity since their 1987 debut Devil Between My Toes. Five albums later, the Ohio band formed by Robert Pollard became fashionable with the classic Bee Thousand (1994), followed by a contract with Matador. Guided by Voices have become a benchmark of American alternative rock, sending regular updates to a loyal fan base. After Mag Earwhig! in 1997 and a spell with TVT Records, GBV went their separate ways in 2004. This jewel of American rock returned six years later with a tour and a new album, Let's Go Eat the Factory. Stricken by overproductivity, GBV recorded three albums in a row in 2012-2013, followed by Motivational Jumpsuit and Cool Planet in 2014. The onslaught of albums only increased over the following years, especially as the line-up stabilized with, around Pollard (who focused on vocals), guitarists Doug Gillard and Bobby Bare Jr., bassist Mark Shue and drummer Kevin March. Three original albums in 2019, as many in 2020, two each in 2021 and 2022, three in 2023 and Strut of Kings in 2024, followed by Universe Room and Thick Rich and Delicious in 2025.
