Biography

Sebadoh is an American indie rock group formed in 1986 in Northampton, Massachusetts, by Lou Barlow, Eric Gaffney, and later joined by Jason Loewenstein in 1989; the trio collectively contributed vocals, guitars, and percussion. The band’s breakthrough came with the self‑released cassette Weed Forestin’ in 1987, followed by the The Freed Man cassette in 1988, which attracted Homestead Records and led to the full‑length album The Freed Man in 1989. Subsequent releases-The Freed Weed (1990), Sebadoh III (1991), Bubble & Scrape (1993), Bakesale (1994), Harmacy (1996), and The Sebadoh (1999)-were issued on Homestead, Sub Pop, and later Domino and City Slang, marking the band’s transition to a broader indie audience. After a hiatus beginning in 2000, the original lineup reunited for a 2007 tour and reissues of early material. Sebadoh returned with the EP Secret in 2012, followed by Defend Yourself (2013) on Joyful Noise Recordings, which debuted at Number 1 on Billboard’s New Alternative Artists chart, and Act Surprised (2019) on Dangerbird Records, featuring the single "Celebrate the Void". The group has maintained a steady presence in the lo‑fi and alternative rock scenes, with continued touring and occasional releases, and remains active in the contemporary indie landscape.
