Biography
Sullivan Joseph Fortner, born December 29, 1986, in New Orleans, is an acclaimed American jazz pianist. He began playing piano at four, inspired by church music, and honed his skills through the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, Oberlin Conservatory, and Manhattan School of Music. In 2009, he joined vibraphonist Stefon Harris' band, followed by a pivotal role in Roy Hargrove's quintet from 2010 to 2017. Fortner debuted as a bandleader with Aria (2015) and released Moments Preserved (2018), blending trio performances with guest appearances. Notable accolades include the 2015 Cole Porter Fellowship in Jazz, solidifying his status in contemporary jazz. Following a duo with Rufus Reid on 2023 It's the Nights I Like, Fortner released the double piano album Solo Game, a demonstration of his various influences, including Thelonious Monk, Stevie Wonder, Randy Weston, and Fred Hersch. He later joined vocalist Kurt Elling for Wildflower, Vol. 1 (2025), then recorded Southern Nights with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Marcus Gilmore.
