Biography

Composer and pianist born in Meulan-en-Yvelines on June 17, 1974, Baptiste Trotignon took up the violin in his youth, before choosing the piano, following in the footsteps of his father, an amateur musician who gave him his first lessons. After graduating from the Conservatoire de Nantes, the young musician turned to jazz. He began composing for the cinema, notably for Alain Corneau's film Le Nouveau Monde (1995). He then moved to Paris, where he continued his studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur, winning the soloist prize at the La Défense jazz festival in 1996. In 1998, the pianist formed his own trio with Clovis Nicolas and Tony Rabeson, recording the album Fluide (2000). Winner of the Grand Prix du Concours Martial Solal organized by the City of Paris in 2002, and the revelation trophy at the Victoires du jazz the following year, Baptiste Trotignon produced the piano collections Solo (2003) and Solo II (2005), followed by the recording of the quartet Trotignon - El Malek - Hall - Pallemaerts (2005) and a contribution to the trio led by drummer Aldo Romano on Flower Power (2006). In New York, he records in 2009 Share with Matt Penman, Otis Brown III, Eric Harland, Tom Harrell and Mark Turner, who invites him in 2013 on the duo album Dusk Is a Quiet Place. In 2015, the pianist unveils his concerto Different Places, accompanied by Nicholas Angelich and the Orchestre national Bordeaux Aquitaine conducted by Paul Daniel. He joins forces with Jeanne Added, Melody Gardot and Miossec on Song Song Song (2012) and with Thomas Bramerie and Jeff Ballard on Hit (2014). After two Afro-Cuban collaborations with percussionist Minino Garay in 2016(Chimichurri) and saxophonist Yosvany Terry in 2017(Ancestral Memories), in 2019 the You've Changed project brings together Joe Lovano, Ibrahim Maalouf, Thomas de Pourquery, Avishai Cohen, Vincent Ségal and Camélia Jordana. The follow-up solo piano album, Body and Soul, features a range of covers of jazz standards. 2023 saw the release of Brexit Music, a collection of British pop classics performed on piano. The following year, the pianist accompanies Feu! Chatterton leader Arthur Teboul on his first solo album, covering a series of French heritage songs on Piano Voix.
