Biography

Strange Advance, a Canadian new‑wave group formed in 1982 in Vancouver, British Columbia, emerged from the collaboration of keyboardist Drew Arnott, vocalist and guitarist Darryl Kromm, and bassist Paul Iverson, who had met in the city’s burgeoning music scene. Their breakthrough came with the single "Love Games" in 1982, followed by "She Controls Me" and "Kiss In The Dark", which secured modest airplay across North America and established the band’s synth‑heavy, progressive rock sound. Chronologically, the trio released the debut album Worlds Away (1982), earning a gold certification in Canada; the sophomore effort 2WO (1985), also gold, produced the hit "We Run"; and the third studio release The Distance Between (1988), featuring the top‑twenty single "Love Becomes Electric" and collaborations with session musicians Randy Bachman and Allan Holdsworth. The group’s activity waned after 1988, but a 1995 compilation Worlds Away & Back provided remixed and unreleased tracks. In the 2010s, both Worlds Away and The Distance Between were remastered with bonus material, and a 2018 crowdfunding campaign funded a brief reunion tour. By 2022, a reconstituted lineup performed at the Hollywood Theatre in Vancouver, with subsequent tours in Ontario and a planned 2024 free outdoor concert at The Sound of Music Festival in Burlington, Ontario.
