The St. Louis Jesuits were a group of Catholic composers â Bob Dufford, John Foley, Tim Manion, Roc OâConnor, and Dan Schutte â who studied together at Saint Louis University. They composed in a folk-style, using acoustic guitars and contemporary-style melodies to set biblical and other religious texts to music. Their first album, Neither Silver Nor Gold, was released in 1974. Their second studio album, Earthen Vessels (1975), became a major success. They went on to record A Dwelling Place (1976), Gentle Night: Music for Advent and Christmas (1977), Lord of Light (1981), and The Steadfast Love (1985). The group was active from 1970 until 1985, and reunited in 2005 for their anniversary album Morning Light. Over the years, the St. Louis Jesuits earned multiple Grammy nominations and later (in 2021) received honorary Doctor of Music degrees from Saint Louis University.
