Biography

Daniel Laurent Schutte, born on December 28, 1947, in Neenah, Wisconsin, is an American composer of Catholic and contemporary Christian liturgical music. As a Jesuit seminarian, he co-founded the St. Louis Jesuits, who popularized contemporary church music in English. Their album Earthen Vessels sold over one million copies. Schutte left the Society of Jesus in 1986 but continued composing, releasing nine solo collections with OCP Publications. Notable compositions include "Here I Am, Lord" (1981, also known as "I, the Lord of Sea and Sky") and his Mass of Christ the Savior (2012). Schutte's music has been featured in movie and television soundtracks, including Dark Waters, Yes, God, Yes, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Will and Grace. He holds two master of arts degrees, one in theology and one in liturgy, from The Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, and has received four honorary doctoral degrees, two in humane letters and two in music, for his contributions to the church.
